Response to State Auditor’s Office Report on Classified Employee Turnover for Fiscal Year 2015

The State Auditor’s Office released An Annual Report on Classified Employee Turnover for Fiscal Year 2015 Dec. 22. The statewide turnover rate for FY 2015 was 18 percent, an increase of 0.5 percent from FY 2014. The report examines turnover at specific agencies, among various populations and in different regions of the state.

TPEA Executive Director Gary W. Anderson issued this statement in response to the report:

“What this report has illustrated for the past several years is that the State of Texas is not a competitive employer in a vibrant economy. Eighteen percent turnover is concerning, but it’s even more disturbing that turnover is twice as high among employees younger than 30 and those with fewer than two years of service. Like all Texans, state employees clearly have other job options to pursue, and this report shows that they are. But what does this mean for the taxpayer? The employees they’ve invested in are leaving in droves. How much does this cost, both in terms of employee recruitment and training and in quality of service? This presents a serious challenge for state leaders as the stewards of Texas government.”
